Asperger Syndrome: In-Depth Help for the Classroom, with Teresa Bolick, Ph.D.
Students with Asperger syndrome (AS) present with a whole host of strengths and neurodevelopmental challenges. Many have co-existing learning, attentional, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Even teachers well-versed in differentiated instruction can struggle when balancing the needs of the student with AS and the needs of the rest of the class. It is clear that simply assigning an educational assistant is not the issue. But what else can be done? This workshop will provide practical and detailed strategies that optimize independent functioning for the student with AS within the general education and resource classrooms. It is designed for professionals who already have a working knowledge of AS, attention and executive function difficulties, and social communication deficits

Differentiated Instruction for More Challenged Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders with Teresa Bolick, Ph.D.

Regardless of specific diagnosis, students with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in elementary and secondary grade levels that present with a complex array of strengths and challenges, passions and peeves. Parents and intervention teams are often stymied as they attempt to balance direct and intensive instruction with participation within the least restrictive academic and community environment. This balancing act is even more difficult when the student demonstrates substantial delays in communication, academic, and/or social functioning. Fortunately, our growing knowledge of differentiated instruction for all students can point us toward a more systematic approach to inclusion and skill development in students with ASDs. Participants are encouraged to bring IEPs (with parental permission), curriculum frameworks, and lesson plans to share with the group.

What's Love Got to Do With It? with Teresa Bolick, Ph.D.
Like their age-mates, adolescents with Asperger Syndrome or high functioning autism often yearn for best friends and girl/boyfriends. Many also experience sexual feelings as their brains and bodies mature. Yet these adolescents often lack the social knowledge and skills that are necessary for mature and safe relationships. Moreover, they seldom have the opportunity to share their concerns and questions with friends.

This workshop will tackle questions such as:

·How can we help the adolescent make the leap from acquaintanceship to “best friends forever”?
What about romance?
What do we need to teach about sexuality?
How can we ensure that the adolescent is safe in social situations?
What should we do when the adolescent’s behavior is interpreted as bullying, stalking, harassment, or worse?

This workshop is appropriate for parents, professionals, and paraprofessionals who have a working knowledge of autism spectrum disorders and common strategies for teaching social cognition and communication. It is not appropriate for adolescents themselves.
